Roaster's Choice: Sumatra Palompek

When Bob came out with praise for this coffee from Sumatra, it really caught our attention.

We have been working with Bob Fulmer, co-founder and president of Royal Coffee, for years. As a coffee importer, Bob tastes a lot of coffee. He is a humble guy. So when Bob came out with praise for this crop of coffee from Sumatra, it really caught our attention.

Here is what he had to say about this special coffee:

"Back in the day, when I was just off the bus and walking around with my shoes untied, some of the long-time California St. veteran coffee brokers would tell me there are two types of coffee: one for selling, and one for drinking. I just now got off the cupping table, and rushed to my keyboard to recommend a coffee for drinking. Wonderfully complex and surprising, this is a fully washed Sumatra, and one of the most impressive in my memory. Wow. I’d love to think that this standout coffee will be bringing some happy moments to coffee lovers now brewing at home."

After reading Bob's review, we immediately ordered ourselves a sample. We were not disappointed; this a very special coffee and we are excited to share it with you all.

Sumatra Palompek: we chose a medium degree of roast to highlight the notes of maple, pine and dark chocolate that go so wonderfully with Fall.

This coffee comes to us from the Barokah Cooperative, a group of 140 small coffee producers that farm on family owned plots of land located around Mount Kerinci, the highest volcano in Indonesia. Their farm management practices, that work to decrease forest encroachment,  create a protective buffer for the Kerinci Seblat national park, which encircles the entire Kerinci valley.

This stunning national park is habitat for the Sumatran Tiger.

Sumatra Palompek is a fully washed washed coffee, which is very unusual for Sumatran beans.  After the cherries are sorted, de-pulped, and fermented, they are washed at the Barokah Mill and dried gently on raised beds. The washing process is part of what makes these beans so unique in their flavor.

Supplies are limited, get some while you can.

Enjoy, coffee lovers!
